Part 2 of Easter celebrations Chiesa di San Paolo

Hi all,
These are the decorations that are used for palm Sunday. If I have it correctly they take these to church with them.  They are almonds or chocolate.

Traditional Easter cakes.

The beginning of the white  procession at 2:30 AM.till 5 AM on Good Friday. There are about 400 men that participate. The ones that wear the hoods have the honor because the family has done it before them. You must have it passed down through the generations.  There is a gentleman that they honored this year for 80 years of being in the procession. He started at the age of 11 and he is 91 now. So he has family under him that is in the procession and hooded.

The band starts first and plays along the way.

The white unhooded come first and they sing and chant and then the hooded come and some will carry symbols such as crosses, chains, robes, torches, knife, hammer, crown of thorns....whatever was used on Jesus.

The Madonna is looking for Jesus...the procession goes around to different churches on the way.

She has just come out of the church and is still looking for Jesus.

The end of the night.

This is the beginning of the Black procession which starts on Friday night at 8 PM

They have found Jesus and he is dead so the black represents their mourning

Mary will be united with Jesus in the churches.

One of the churches. The people have brought sand and dirt into the church a made a path to the cross

The end of a very long night and the town is still lit with candles and torches.. Very pretty and very moving.
ciao :-)
