Cristiana Panicco, the president of the institute, introduces Andrew.
The other two Professors standing to the right are visiting from Hofstra University in New York. They have 12 students with them and traveling around Europe for the semester while they are teaching them 5 courses. They met Andrew the night before and invited him here for us to meet. He had just arrived here on his last day of his journey.

Andrew started his world-walk of 1020 days here in Sorrento. Of theat number, he walked about 700 because of stopping and working along the way.
Though Andrew initially started from Minnesota to the East coast.   From Virginia he crewed on a 33' sail boat across the ocean. That had a little mishap as it hit a whale and started to sink. The four were rescued 2 hours later by a cargo ship which landed in Sorrento.  Here is where Andrew decided to walk around the world.  He stated that one of his difficulties was crossing a country in the 90 days on the visa he had for that country.

His mom, an English teacher, is here in the audience. She took a week off from school to meet up with her son. They keep in contact through a tracking device that Andrew finally agreed to take since he refused a cell phone.

Why did he do this?..because he said that is what he wanted to do and he stuck to his word which is very important to him.  He stated that after high school he had also bicycled from his home in Minnesota to the bottom of South America and had also canoed the full length of the Mississippi River!
He is not sure what his next adventure will be but I am sure we will hear about him.  He was a most engaging speaker.  By the way, his only item he was able to rescue off the sinking boat was his violin which he carried with him all the way around the world.  He would often play on street corners to earn a few extra dollars.

Ciao :-)
