Day 5 Jan 22 Off to the Carlos Fernando Sanminguel school and a lunch with the family of the Kichwa village.

Our days are running together fast and furiously.
This morning we were up and out by 6 am for a bird watch. It had rained last night and when we went down to the boats, the water was up over the landing
We had to climb in the boat which we do all the time but just as I got in, my leg and knee twisted.  That was the kiss of death.  Pain
After breakfast back in boats to go to a school which we had an English lesson questions from the kids and teacher. She has 12 kids from the ages of first grade to seventh. They are suppose to go onto high school but a lot won’t because of family situations. 2 of the students have to walk 45 mins one way, we all chipped in and bought a printer for the school .
We then went to to a farm where we will learn to make a traditional dish . We first traveled through her farm learning about yucca plants and replanting after we pulled up the roots for lunch.
We had two lessons. One how to wrap and cook catfish over an open fire and how to make “ yucca” shine.
Some of My fellow mates wanted to go out and fish. It is pouring rain. Sitting here on the deck in a lighting storm watching them.  I guess water and lightening isn’t  a problem here
When they come back we will have a slide show

A little water! Amazing how fast the river comes up.

We had so much rain- lost our power and everything was floating.
I found this fascinating. It is the inside of a tree.
                                                                Plantains
                                                A home of the village
This the Shaman's house.  I loved the little boy trying to get the puppy play with him.
The school is on the right.  Everyone wears a uniform. The grandcircle has taken on this school as a project. They have built a new addition for a lunch area or an area to do a project.
Celso's favorite student.  Celso said he was so shy when he first met him.
We are teaching them English on 6 fruits with Celso and Cheryl
The kids at the school from young to 12 year old..The teacher has her handsful!
Our Shaman picked John to heal with plants, bushes, incense, herbs and other things.  He is a Shaman so he can use other psychedelic drugs to go to other levels. He acts the intemediary between the natural and the supernatural worlds. This is a whole other stage which is usually only used on the Kichwa people. His wife stands by to help.

Christine also showed me how to sharpen my knives.
Christine showing us yuka plant . -How to dig it up and how to plant it and then, how to eat it

-

The family pet along with two parrakeets that like to bite.
House and family of Christine. our host for lunch Behind this home is a road that is used for the gas line which is burning in the atmosphere.  The oil and cutting of timber has changed their world. The Kichwas people have turned to livestock and ecotourism to help them.
We took maito  fish added salt and wrapped in leaves of bijao plant This is a special dish for quests.
                                                            Our fish cooking
We are making "Chicha"moonshine tea from the Cassava fruit. It is harder than it looks. maybe because we are sitting
Rembember those worms. Here is Gary eating one raw. Celso had asked for volunteers and fortunately I had already volunteered with termites! Below is what they look like When we ate them cooked -crunchy

                                                        The spread being put out.
The fish came out great wrapped in leaves - a little salt added as you wrapped and tied.

My gang decided to go fishing but with my knee being sore, i decided to rest it but watched..Suddenly a big thunder and lightning storm came in. The crack next to me was awakening! but the big branches that fell into the water by the boat was impressive.  They didn't come in though..Glad to be on shore myself!

Looks like we have electricity tonight. we have had many hours at different times of no elecricity very little to mostly none internet and no cell.  We are ready for bed.
