Today we pack our bags to move on from Bovec to the next area and new hotel for 4 nights. We are crossing back and forth from Slovenia to Italy and back again. The first stop is along a beautiful lake. We have climbed up about 1000 feet and the roads are switch backs and very narrow, Our bus has made many cars back up! Across from the lake we discover a WW bunker.
The next stop is the Predil mine. This mine was very important for lead and zinc, It is said that the mine started in the 14th Century because the Romans used lead in their pipes. The mine has 23 levels. We are standing on the level that has 23 levels down and 3 up. At level 13 two countries are connected together, The miners worked in 3 shifts and 8 hours long. They used mules and the ratio was 1 mule to 5 carts for hauling out the minerals.
I can’t imagine working there with air drills, lanterns that used oil, the dust and lack of air. Dynamite was used in 1967. The mine was closed in1999. They filled it in with rocks-is what are guide said.
So beautiful.
