Antarctica- Drake's Passage Day 6

Sunday Feb 3- super bowl day . They won 13-3.

Woke up to 35 knots gale force winds- 12 knot speed and 12-13 foot waves  with a temperature of 45  and rainy  But who can tell with the waves hitting the windows.  It is "Shake Drake" !!!!!


Everywhere you go the bags are hanging from the railings, on the tables, where ever you might need them.....



As we were at sea, those that could join us came to the lectures that were provided.

Bird lecture
The largest bird is the Emperor Penguin and the largest flying in the Wandering Albatross that weighs 12 kg with a wing span of 11 feet. 
The sea birds are larger than the land birds and only come to land for hatching and night for protection against predator. A lot of the species has only 1 chick because not much food to feed both.  Most have the same mate for life and come back to the same burrow. These birds have large wing spread and web feet.  They have a high sense of smell and use their regulatory gland to help take the salt our of their blood stream

Penguins have 19 species. They are one of the fastest traveling bird.They are extremely social. They can dive up to 600’ and stay under 20 minutes but they need ice caps to breed.

Lecture on Antarctica 
It is the Coldest, dries, windiest, most inhospitable, land of extremes. It is the 5th largest continent and about size of US and mexico   Located at the bottom and the southern worst seas that can get up to 150 or a 15 foot building. It is also the largest desert in the world with 5.5 million sq. miles.

World’s  largest current is the  Antarctic circumpolar current which is  cold and deep. The arctic freezes at 2 degree celsius and Ice can be a thick sheet of 3 miles down,... The lowest temperature is minus 128 F. There is a  large rift which is the size of Rhode Island. It has grown to more than 300 feet wide and 70 miles long.. By January 2017 is was 109 miles long. 

Several seas:. Wendell sea, Bellingshausen Sea, Amundsen sea, Ross Sea, DuMont d’Urville Sea, David Sea King Haakon VII Sea and .two more seas   Pacific Ocean.

Antartica has 4 polars  south geographic pole, south geographic, and south magnetic pole of inassessable.
Mostly made of bedrock and pushed below sea.

Extremes  200 mph wind in 1972  snow 6.5 precipitation per year, lowest temp -128  average 5,000 feet

Treaty already signed for the next duration. 
12 countries that signed the treaty, have no claim - 50 nations have stations and the biggest station one is the McMurdo which is man by the US. It is capable of supporting 1200 residents.
