Antarctica Day 5-- Tierra del Fuego National park

Day 5- Saturday Feb 2nd- tour of the Tierra Del Fuego National Park_- The park was created in 1960 and borders Chile. It is the only park on the ocean. It was home to the Yamanas who lived here till the Europeans arrived.    One of the interesting thing was that beavers were brought here in 1940- 25 of them from Canada and then let go. Here in the park there are only 5 species of animals.

 Nests found in the trees
All kinds of berries and Condor Mts

I put this map in to show how Chile comes right down to the point and causes anyone traveling to go into Argentina has to go into Chile then out to Argentina.

These berries are used for the Dulce de Calafate jam that is a speciality of Argentina.

Here we saw the Upland goose. on the nest
Looking at Lake Acicami and at Chile in the background.

                                                             BQ of lamb..

                                                                Lamb of a stick!

Our ship is called the Ocean Diamond.  In the picture above, the ship is to the left behind the red.

We are getting out of town before we get put away!  Next stop is our ship.

First thing we do --life boat drill!

                                                          A ship coming towards us

We are leaving Ushuaia and traveling down the Beagle Channel. Out pass the Cape Horn which we aren't going to see.  Now the fun begins crossing Drake's Passage.

We are escaping Ushuaia before we are locked up!  On to our ship.

  1. Hi Marti, Your pictures are beautiful - brings back such wonderful memories. In Ushuaia, we stayed in a hotel in town - yours has a beautiful view but I wouldn't have wanted a 2-mile walk into town.
Can't wait to hear about your Drake Passage crossing!
