Antarctica - Feb 6th -day 9 Torgersen Island and Paradise Bay

Day 9th Feb 6th          64.66 by 64.84 W      41 degrees and rainy,    8-10 knots

We are off to Torgersen Island and Paradise Bay.  We hope to visit Palmer Station , Argentine station Almirante Brown

Torgerson Island is approximately 400 yards across in a circle island but is preserved and we can not land on the island only go around it.  It lies at Arthur Harbour on the southwest of Anvers Island which is home to the Adeline Penguins, Kelp Gulls and Giant Petrels.

We ventured out in rough water. We went by the palmer station but couldn’t go ashore. There was a research ship that was coming into the harbour to dock there. Changing of the guard.. they have about 40 scientists in the summer and 15 in the winter.

There is ice everywhere but when I turned around the ocean was so green. This picture doesn't show the emerald green that I saw. It was beautiful along with the rainbow in the other horizon.
This picture is showing the separation in the ice..How long before it will come crashing down.           probably years though I was hoping it would do it as I was watching it!

We saw elephant seals for the first time. They have funny noses and are the unusual . They can dive down under the water to 3 or 6,000 feet. and stay under for 2 hours at a time. That is unbelievable.  This also the first time we saw Adeline penguins.and kelp gulls

                                     This is a fur seal.

First look at the Adelie Penguin. It has a tuxedo shirt front and a white ring around its eyes. Its beak is reddish with a black tip.

They build their nests of small stones and will usually deliver 2 eggs in November. Both adults share the incubating the eggs and after 35 days they are hatched. Their main predator is the leopard seal.

Carlos collected some ice for our drinks!!

Paradise Bay is located on the Danco Coast with its bay well protected by tall peaks and islands..  Here you will find Blue -eyed shags, Cape Petrels, antarctic terns and Kelp Gulls

They called this table ice. The difference between ice shelf and iceberg is the an ice shelf is connected to land and an iceberg is free floating.

                                                             This is the Argentinean station
J                                  ust a little piece of ice we had to go around!
In the afternoon we went to the Chilean station and it is rough. It is snowing and sleeting as we land.

This is Lucy that has lost her color due to a condition called leucism which is loss of pigmentation.

There are up to 15 men that live here for a 4 months at a time .
Gentoo penguins The white on the head is their marking.

Whales...they are so hard to capture on my camera I am buying a new camera for my next trip.
The game of Cribbage  keeps going on ....it was best of 2 out of 3,... then 5 out of 7 ... 7 out of 9  ,,,9 out of 11...and so on.. the trip ended ...chris won 2..sorry Chris  you will just have to catch up! I loved seeing them laugh together so it didn't matter who won. (Chris would never let me look at his hand,, maybe he should of so I could have helped him!)
